Water of Leith
The Water of Leith is a river, which flows 22 miles, from the Pentland Hills, through Edinburgh city and out to the Firth of Forth in Leith. For a tranquil walk or cycle, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, you can join the Water of Leith Walkway, which runs alongside the river. The river has fascinating links with Edinburgh’s industrial past. In the late 18th century there were 76 mill sites along its banks. And evidence remains today in the old mill buildings and other relics that lay along the route.
The Water of Leith Walkway
The Water of Leith Walkway stretches from Balerno in the western suburbs of the city, to Leith in the east, passing many attractions along the way. It takes over 6 hours to walk the entire route. However, you can choose any section for a shorter stroll.
The Water of Leith Visitor Centre is located on Lanark Road in Slateford, and this is a great starting point. Buses to Slateford are available from Princes Street. Or, you could stay near the city centre and start your walk at the picturesque Dean Village and Stockbridge area.
There are audio trails for each section, which you can listen to as you walk. You can also purchase a walkway map at the Visitor Centre or online.
‘A wonderful stroll, with our favourite part being between Stockbridge and St Bernard’s well. Wear comfortable shoes as it is a pretty long walk, but really pleasant and not very demanding.’
