Lauriston Castle
Lauriston Castle is a historic tower house, located in the north east outskirts of Edinburgh. Built in 1590 for the Napier family and extended in the 1800s, the house overlooks the Firth of Forth. Lauriston’s last residents, the Reids, left the house in trust to Scotland in 1926. The interiors have remained unchanged ever since, and the house is now a fascinating museum. The beautiful and extensive grounds and gardens are open free to the public.
Exploring the house and grounds
Take a tour of Lauriston Castle and explore the Edwardian-style interiors and a remarkable collection of items belonging to Mr and Mrs W. R. Reid, and Mr William Barton, the last residents. The family collected fine furniture, ornaments and decorative items from all over the world, which are now on display in the house. A visit here is like stepping back in time to the early 20th century. Please note, there is an admission charge to enter the house.
The large grounds are worth a visit on their own, with 30 acres of gardens and parkland to enjoy. From the tranquil park and woodland, croquet lawn, formal gardens and pond garden to the modern Japanese Edinburgh-Kyoto Friendship Garden. Access to the grounds and gardens is free, and they are open daily.
‘Beautiful castle packed with history and antiquities. Tour guide was very knowledgeable and interesting. The grounds are lovely and the tearoom worth a visit too.’
