The Camera Obscura
This visitor attraction was first established by entrepreneur Maria Short as an observatory and museum on Calton Hill in 1835. Then moving to its current location on the Royal Mile in 1853. The main attraction was The Camera Obscura in a darkened room in the top of the tower. It worked like a traditional pinhole camera, projecting live moving images of Edinburgh onto a screen. In the days before cinema, this was an amazing spectacle!
After Short’s death, a scientist and town planner named Patrick Geddes took over. He ran the attraction from 1892 to 1932, continuing to expand and evolve it during this time.
In 1977, it became the Camera Obscura and World of Illusions. Now with five floors of illusions and hands-on exhibits. The Camera Obscura Show still takes place at the top of the tower regularly every day.

A World of Illusions
From historical wonders to modern marvels, the World of Illusions features over 100 exhibits. For example, the Bewilderworld floor features a confusing mirror maze and a dizzying vortex tunnel. The Light Fantastic floor is filled with bamboozling visual effects and optical illusions. And the rooftop terrace offers stunning views of Edinburgh, with powerful telescopes so you can take a closer look.
There is also a great little gift shop, selling souvenirs such as mind-bending puzzles and games, magic tricks, snacks and personalised gifts.
