Scottish National War Memorial
The Scottish National War Memorial commemorates the Scots who lost their lives in World War I, World War II and subsequent conflicts including the Malayan Emergency, Korean War, Northern Ireland, Falklands War and Gulf War. Located within the walls of Edinburgh Castle, its displays the Roll of Honour for Scots, which names every Scottish casualty killed in the conflicts.
History and architecture
Scottish architect, Robert Lorimer, designed this impressive building, in the aftermath of World War I. Built within the walls of Edinburgh Castle, on the highest part of Castle Rock. The Prince of Wales (who later became Edward VIII) officially declared it open on 14th July 1927 in a formal ceremony. The memorial has not changed since this time. However, names have been added to the rolls of honour following further conflicts. And this continues today.
A team of artists and craftspeople came together to create the memorials, sculptures, carvings and furniture that adorn the memorial building. Both the interior and exterior feature fine, elaborate details. Inside, the Hall of Honour displays grand wall memorials, and leather-bound books list the names of those that died in war. The shrine is a focal point, sitting on the very highest part of Castle Rock. Lit by tall stained glass windows, a steel casket stands here, holding the original rolls of honour.
‘This is part of the castle and can be viewed with castle entry. Heart wrenching and amazing tribute. The work which has gone into it is amazing. A must visit’
