Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art
The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art is home to some of the world’s finest modern and contemporary art. It sits alongside the Dean Gallery and consists of two amazing Edinburgh galleries, Modern One and Modern Two. So it’s well worth a visit for the aspiring artist and inspired traveller alike.
Modern One
The first gallery on any art lover’s list has to be Modern One. It includes an impressive collection of art, as well as a few pieces on special loan. From the beginning of the twentieth century, cubist paintings, expressionist pieces and modern British art. From Matisse and Picasso, to Francis Bacon and Andy Warhol. If you only have time to visit one Edinburgh gallery, make sure you visit Modern One.
Modern Two
Once you have thoroughly explored the modern classics and have got to grips with the modernist movement, make your way to the second gallery – Modern Two. Modern Two is home to an ever-changing programme of world-class art exhibitions. Also with an amazing library, impressive archive and a few permanent pieces on display, it is your window into the future of modern art.
‘Visited this museum today. It was absolutely amazing and had an original Picasso and Salvador Dali and lots of other artists. Also some amazing art installations including a rug made of 10,000 red roses. Just amazing. It’s free admission and well worth a visit.’

Modernism Set In Stone
Both fantastic Edinburgh galleries are set in an expansive parkland teaming with spectacular sculptures by a number of important modernists. And since everything at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art is a work of art, even the lawn in front of Modern One is a dramatic “landform” of a serpentine mound reflected in three crescent-shaped pools.
A creative refuel
And to round off the perfect trip down modernism lane, both galleries in the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art have a popular café, making it the ideal spot to stop, refuel and enjoy a tasty bite to eat or much-needed cup of coffee.
