Assembly Rooms
The Assembly Rooms is a large arts venue on George Street in Edinburgh, used for hosting events, performances, exhibitions and gatherings. Dating from 1787 and extended and refurbished several times over the years, this is a grand building with a music hall, ballroom and nine drawing rooms. The decoration is opulent, with crystal chandeliers and gold leaf details throughout. This is one of the major venues for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, a huge arts festival that takes place in the city every August.
What’s on at the Assembly Rooms?
With its wide range of event spaces, the Assembly Rooms hosts events and shows of all types and sizes. The Ballroom and Music Hall are ideal for large-scale events, while the smaller rooms accommodate more intimate performances. During August each year, the Festive Fringe takes over the venue with a diverse range of shows, from established acts to rising stars. There is also a year-round programme of music, comedy, entertainment and exhibitions.

Links with Edinburgh Festival Fringe
The Assembly Rooms became an Edinburgh Festival Fringe venue in 1981, when theatre director William Burdett-Coutts leased the venue from the council to use for his own show and others. He then founded the Assembly theatre promotion company. This is now one of the “big four” promotors, running many of the shows performed at the Festival Fringe every summer, with a group of venues across the city.
