June is the first month of summer. A chance to get out in the sunshine and enjoy a picnic in one of Edinburgh’s beautiful parks and gardens. Plus, summer concerts and festivals kick-off for the season.
June festivals and events
As summer gets underway in Edinburgh, we look forward to the return of Leith Festival, taking place from 8th to 16th June. Gala Day is yet to be confirmed but is usually on the first Saturday of the festival, which is a great day out on Leith Links, with outdoor stalls, music and entertainment.
On 15th June, the Edinburgh Canal Festival and Raft Race is hosted along the Union Canal. The raft race is very entertaining to watch, as entrants compete in their own creatively designed rafts!
Not forgetting the spectacular Royal Highland Show at Ingliston, a celebration of Scottish farming. Featuring livestock displays, farriery competitions, outdoor activities, food and drink, live entertainment and more! This year the Royal Highland Show is held from 20th to 23rd June.
Theatre breaks this June
Our hotel is just around the corner from Edinburgh Playhouse, a fantastic theatre that presents a varied programme of live shows throughout the year. In, stage musicals include Six from the 11th to 15th and Grease from the 25th to 29th. There’ll also be comedy from Tom Allen on the 18th and disco from Nile Rodgers + CHIC on the 17th. Attraction of the month: Princes Street Gardens
As the weather warms up this summer, Princes Street Gardens is the perfect spot for a picnic. Just a short walk from our hotel, this large public space in Edinburgh is free to enter. There is much to see within the gardens, including a large collection of statues, memorials and landmarks. Take in views of Edinburgh Castle from beside the impressive Ross Fountain. View the towering Scott Monument, and see how many of Sir Walter Scott’s characters you can spot adorning the huge Gothic monument. Or simply find a bench and watch the world go by for a while. Day trip of the month: North Berwick
Edinburgh is a great base from which to explore the rest of Scotland. With convenient transport links by train and bus, and hire car options available, it’s so easy to get around. Our day trip of the month is North Berwick, a seaside town in East Lothian, just half an hour by train from Edinburgh. This is the perfect day trip destination on a sunny day. The picturesque town has lovely beaches with fantastic views out to the Firth of Forth and the famous Bass Rock. There are plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants. You can also visit the Scottish Seabird Centre or take a Wildlife Boat Trip around the islands in the Firth of Forth, such as May, Craigleith, Lamb and Bass Rock.
