If you love exotic animals and huge lantern displays, then you’ll be in for a treat at Edinburgh Zoo this winter. The spectacular Giant Lanterns of China at Edinburgh Zoo will be on display from 1st December 2017 to 25th February 2018. So, there’s no better time to book your stay at Parliament House Hotel in Edinburgh.
Animal-themed Chinese Lanterns at Edinburgh Zoo
Edinburgh’s skyline will be illuminated by 450 giant lanterns that feature a wide range of animals, from lions and Giant Pandas to colourful Chinese dragons. With more than 34 impressive lantern installations, it’s the biggest event of its kind in Scotland.
More than 150 skilled Chinese craftsmen from Sichuan in China have created these huge magnificent silk and steel lantern structures. They have been placed around Edinburgh Zoo, taking visitors on a trail where lanterns light up pathways, lakes and ponds.
While you follow the trail, you’ll see lanterns of native birds, penguins, flamingos, snails, insects and ancient Chinese heritage symbols.
Three Fantastic Themes
This year’s Giant Chinese Lanterns at Edinburgh Zoo will explore three themes. These are China, Edinburgh Zoo and the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland’s (RZSS) worldwide animal conservation work.
Each theme represents the animals, the zoo’s conservation efforts, and the relationship between Edinburgh Zoo and Sichuan in China. Sichuan is the birthplace of Edinburgh Zoo’s two giant pandas, Tian Tian (Sweetie) and Yang Guang (Sunshine). While visiting the Giant Lanterns of China, why not head to the enclosure and visit these cuddly pandas?
