Stirling
Stirling is a beautiful and historic city, which is easy to visit for the day during a stay with us in Edinburgh. The journey takes just less than an hour by car or train. There are regular rail services from Edinburgh Waverley Station. It was once the capital of Scotland and there is much to see here. Being a bustling city, there are plenty of places to shop, relax and eat and drink in. Top attractions include Stirling Castle, Stirling Old Town Jail and the National Wallace Monument.
Historic attractions
The city of Stirling has a long, rich history. It has had a turbulent past, indeed its name is said to mean “place of battle or struggle”.
The imposing Stirling Castle dates from at least 1110. Although, most of the present buildings were built between 1490 and 1600. Strategically placed, high on a hilltop, it watches over the city below. The historic castle buildings are remarkably well-preserved and maintained, and are still in use today. This is a must-see attraction during your day trip to Stirling.
Stirling has connections with many great historical figures, such as Mary Queen of Scots, Bonnie Prince Charlie and Robert the Bruce. The National Wallace Monument pays tribute to William Wallace, one of Scotland’s national heroes. It is located close to the site of his victory at Stirling Bridge in 1297 and offers spectacular views over the city and beyond.

History brought to life
Stand in the place where the Battle of Bannockburn took place in 1314. The Battle of Bannockburn Experience takes you back to the day of the battle, with digitally recreated scenes and an immersive experience. Learn about this important event in Scottish history, where Robert the Bruce defeated the English in battle, during the First War of Scottish Independence.
Then step back in time at Stirling Old Town Jail and discover stories from the city’s places of punishment. You’ll get the chance to tour the old cells and find out what life was like for prisoners in the 19th century. There is even a Prison Escape Room experience, where groups must solve puzzles and clues in order to solve the crime and escape in time!
