Road trips to the north of Edinburgh
If you would like to head north from Edinburgh to Glencoe by car then you are in for a treat. Over two and a half hours your route will take you through Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. This is a beautiful area to enjoy and the views from your car will be stunning. Upon arrival at Glencoe, you will soon be steeped in its history, where the Glencoe massacre of 1692 took place. If you are looking for wildlife, you might get lucky and spot a red deer stag, mountain goats or even a golden eagle.
If you would like to travel further north, an Edinburgh to Inverness road trip is highly recommended. Taking just over three hours by car, this route takes you through the heart of Scotland and then into Cairngorms National Park. Breathtaking scenery awaits as you drive through this park. Upon arrival at Inverness, you could take a trip to Loch Ness and perhaps catch a glimpse of the legendary monster. More likely though, you’ll have a gorgeous place to relax and have a picnic.
Beaches near Edinburgh
Many people don’t realise that Edinburgh is a seaside town, with nearby Portobello offering sandy beaches and ice cream. The city is also within driving distance to some great other coastlines. Driving around the east coast will give you stunning views over the water as you head towards Gullane and North Berwick. Head further along to visit the beautiful fishing village of Dunbar. For fans of Marvel’s Avengers, a quick stop in St Abbs might be on the cards. It was used as the basis for New Asgard in Avengers: Endgame.
If you decide to drive north on one of your scenic drives from Edinburgh, you can head for the grand beaches of St. Andrews in Fife. Used for the memorable running scenes in Chariots of Fire, the 2-mile long beach runs next to the famous St Andrews Links golf course. If that all seems too busy for you, a quick drive south from St Andrews to Kingsbarns will take you to a lesser known but equally stunning sandy beach.
