1. Edinburgh to Gullane
Leaving Edinburgh, head east to Gullane via the A1 and A198, passing through Leith and Portobello. This drive should take around 40 minutes. Gullane has a beautiful sandy beach, perfect for walks, picnics and relaxing. There is a paid car park at Gullane Bents with a stunning viewing platform, picnic area and access to the beach.

2. Gullane to North Berwick
From Gullane, continue east on the A198 to North Berwick. Where to park in North Berwick.
This lovely seaside town with views of Bass Rock has great beaches, some independent shops and places to stop for lunch. We recommend Buttercup Café on the high street for light bites or coffee and cake.
The Scottish Seabird Centre on the harbour is an interesting place to visit during your stop at North Berwick. Here, you can learn all about Scotland’s marine creatures and enjoy a boat ride (available from spring to autumn) where you’ll explore the wildlife on local islands.

3. North Berwick to Tantallon Castle
About 10 minutes’ drive further along, our next stop is the historic Tantallon Castle. Sitting high on a cliff, this 14th century fortress has amazing architecture and offers wonderful views over the North Sea. There is car park next to the visitor centre.

4. Tantallon Castle to Dunbar
Our final stop is Dunbar, a 20-minute drive continuing along the A198. Here, you can sit by the harbour and enjoy some delicious local fish and chips. Explore the 18th century fort and battery at the east end of the harbour, and take in views of the Dunbar Castle ruins. Then visit one of town’s museums, such as Dunbar Town House Museum and Gallery or John Muir’s Birthplace. Don’t forget your swimming kit if you fancy a splash at Dunbar Leisure Pool.
5. Dunbar to Edinburgh
From Dunbar, it is a 45-minute drive via the A1, back to your cosy room at Parliament House Hotel in Edinburgh. Or you can extend your drive and go back the way you came, along the scenic coastline.

‘Stayed 2 nights there and found it great value. The location is perfect, our room was comfy, the staff was very friendly. The selection of whiskies available at the lounge bar was more than adequate. Thank you!’
