Perth
The Scottish city of Perth is great for a day trip, during a stay with us in Edinburgh. The journey takes around an hour by car, or 1 hour 20 minutes by train or coach. Set on the banks of the River Tay, this is a picturesque place to visit with museums, galleries, castles, gardens and many other attractions to explore. The historic Scone Palace is nearby, and there are regular buses from Perth to the palace.
Scone Palace
Scone Palace is just a short bus ride from the centre of Perth and is a must-see attraction in the area. The current red sandstone palace building dates from 1807, however, its history stretches back much further. Scone (pronounced “scoon”) was the ancient crowning place of Scottish kings from at least the 9th century, and the original home of the Stone of Destiny, a ceremonial stone used in coronations. The stone is now kept with the Scottish Crown Jewels at Edinburgh Castle, but there is a replica on display in the Scone Palace grounds.
Here, you can take a guided tour of the grand palace interior, including the opulent Palace State Rooms. You can also explore the splendid grounds and gardens. There is a coffee shop and food and gift shop on site too. Open season runs from around March to October each year. Please check the website in advance for ticket prices, opening dates/times and any closures.

Perth city attractions
Top attractions in Perth include the Black Watch Museum, Perth Art Gallery and Branklyn Garden. There is also a great city walk, which takes you across the River Tay and around many fascinating and impressive landmarks. Or head up Kinnoull Hill for fabulous views and a visit to Kinnoull Tower.
With a good choice of pubs, cafes and restaurants, you’ll find plenty of places to eat and drink. There are also several independent shops, a high street shopping centre and a farmers’ market, which takes place on the first Saturday of every month.
