Central Library
The Central Library in Edinburgh is a fantastic resource for those researching local history or genealogy. This grand building on George IV Bridge was the first public library in the city. The Edinburgh and Scottish Collection features maps, literature, newspapers and many historic records. You can browse through parish records, censuses, land ownership documents, post office records, military records and so much more. If you want to look at something specific, it may be necessary to contact the library in advance, to make sure it is available.

The Central Library has printed family histories covering over 500 family names. If you have a traditional Scottish surname, such as a clan name, search for this in the library catalogue to find relevant books and resources.
