The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the largest arts festival in the world. If you’re looking for something to tickle your funny bone, you’d be hard pressed to do better than The Fringe. Known for showcasing the best up-and-coming comedy stars as well as hardened veterans of the circuit, this year promises to be bigger than ever. With over 3,000 events across 300 venues running right up until the end of August, Fringe Festival Edinburgh is taking funny business to new levels.
But with so much on offer, it can be a daunting task deciding what to see. It’s why we’ve picked 5 fun-tastic comedy shows guaranteed to leave you in stitches.
5 LOL Comedy Shows to See at the Fringe Festival Edinburgh:
Riches’ character, Coach Eric Coach is an embittered high school sports coach determined to drag his team – The Centaurs – to victory over rival team, The Lizards. It’s a spoof of the classic 80s teen movie narrative complete with love interests. Nostalgia-laden and thoroughly entertaining, expect huge laughs at the Fringe Festival Edinburgh with this great character’s comedy.
Nina Conti: In Your Face
Ventriloquism delivered from a master. Drawing inspiration from her audience “putting (hilarious) words in her mouth”, Conti provides non-stop laughs. Audience participation is high with this one, as Conti straps a face mask on volunteers and works them like her other creations – monk (the cynical money) and Granny (a sweet old Scottish dear). ‘Nina Conti is a genius’ (Mirror).
The Stand are known for putting on great comedy performances year round and take special care to showcase the best talent during The Fringe. If you’re unsure of who to see at the festival, The Stand are always a safe bet. Their producers have great taste so don’t be shy about taking a gamble on an unknown act. You could be seeing the next up-and-coming comedy star.
James Acaster: Represent
The Evening Standard described Acaster as “One of comedy’s most original voices”, as he delivers great observational comedy with his own signature style. In 2014 he was nominated for Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Award Best Show and has since gone on to fantastic performances across all the major British comedy shows. In his new show he promises to be “Running his mouth off about a bunch of stuff nobody even cares about.”
Best of the Fest
A final catch-all for the best The Fringe has to offer. At around midnight most nights, Fringe superstars gather for a compilation of comedy highlights from this year’s performances. Line-ups are announced daily so keep an ear to the ground to catch a knockout show from comedy’s heavy hitters.
