The Scottish Islands of the Firth of Forth
There are almost 800 Scottish islands. And we’ve all heard of the likes of Lewis and Harris, Skye and Mull. But did you know we have our own little group of islands just off the coast of Edinburgh? Here are three of our favourites, and some amazing drone footage of the islands from above.
Cramond Island
Cramond is a pretty little village in the north west of Edinburgh with a rich history as one of the earliest known sites of human settlement in Scotland. And when the tide is out, you can walk across Cramond Causeway from the beach to Cramond Island. Although, you must take note of the safe crossing times on the board at the start of the causeway, to make sure you don’t get stranded over there. The island is a peaceful place for a stroll, a picnic and some wildlife-spotting. There are also several remains of wartime buildings and barracks, which you can explore.
Inchcolm Island
Inchcolm Island is located just a few miles off the coast of Edinburgh, east of the Forth Bridges. This historic island is now a popular visitor attraction managed by Historic Scotland. It has its own ancient abbey, world war fortifications, two beaches and a visitor centre. There are several Edinburgh sightseeing cruises and boat trips to the island, where you can sail over from South Queensferry and spend some time on the island, before heading back to the shore. Look out for dolphins, seals, puffins and other Scottish sealife along the way.
Bass Rock
The Bass Rock is a steep island of volcanic rock, which towers from the Firth of Forth, 100 metres high. It’s home to over 150,000 gannets during the breeding season, plus many other seabirds and wildlife. You can view the rock from North Berwick, a lovely seaside town around a 40-minute drive from the centre of Edinburgh. And the Scottish Seabird Centre run boat trips out to the island and around it. A must for all wildlife enthusiasts!
