The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the largest arts festival in the world. If you’re looking for something to tickle your funny bone, you’d be hard pressed to do better than The Fringe. Known for showcasing the best up-and-coming comedy stars as well as hardened veterans of the circuit, this year promises to be bigger than ever. With over 3,000 events across 300 venues running right up until the end of August, Fringe Festival Edinburgh is taking funny business to new levels.
But with so much on offer, it can be a daunting task deciding what to see. That’s why we’ve picked five comedy shows, guaranteed to leave you in stitches!
Josie Long: Tender
Three-time nominee for best show at the Edinburgh Comedy Awards, Long returns this year with her show Tender, which focuses on her life as a new mother. Expect her usual edgy, indie style as she discusses the joy of parenthood with humour and optimism.
Sophie Ducker: Venus
Sophie Ducker is a rising star on the comedy scene. Venus her debut comedy tour, but you may have seen her on Channel 4’s Riot Girls, 8 Out of 10 Cats and Comedy Central. Described as “silly, sexy, savage”, she’s definitely one to watch!
Eddie Izzard: Expectations of Great Expectations (WIP)
One of the biggest names at this year’s Fringe, Eddie Izzard presents his work-in-progress show Expectations of Great Expectations. Here, Izzard mixes comedy and theatre as he reads and performs the Dickens’ classic tale.
Comedy Dining Experiences
Join Basil, Manuel and Sybil, for Faulty Towers: The Dining Experience. Sit down to a three-course meal where anything could happen! This interactive, partly improvised show has been delighting audiences for 22 years and is still going strong. And new for 2019, Only Fools: The Cushty Dining Experience with Del, Rodders and the gang. Both must-see shows for classic British sitcom fans.
Best Of The Fest
A final catch-all for the best The Fringe has to offer. At around midnight most nights, Fringe superstars gather for Best Of The Fest, a compilation of comedy highlights from this year’s performances. Line-ups are announced daily so keep an ear to the ground to catch a knockout show from comedy’s heavy hitters.
