Visiting Edinburgh in the Colder Months

Visiting Edinburgh in January and February

We know what you are thinking. And it’s okay. You’re thinking. “Why would I visit Edinburgh during the coldest months of the year?” Don’t worry. This is a reasonable question, but January and February in Edinburgh is a magical, quiet and exciting time.

Sure, the weather is a bit cold and wet, but that’s okay – bring a thick jacket! And the nights are long and the days are short, but you know what? We have electrical lighting and heating and everything! Edinburgh at the start of the year is brilliant, and here’s why.

A Quiet, Peaceful Time

Edinburgh's Grassmarket in winter

Coming to Edinburgh in January or February tends to be the cheapest time to travel. Flights and accommodation all tend to be cheaper, meaning more spending money for when you get here.

It’s also a really quiet time in Edinburgh. During August, the population of Edinburgh swells to double. In winter it’s still popular with savvy tourists, but nowhere near as busy. Queues are almost non-existent, the streets aren’t ram-packed and best of all, there’s nearly always a seat available in your favourite pub or café.
