Welcome to Edinburgh in spring 2022
We love Edinburgh in spring, as the nights become lighter and the weather a little warmer. The entire city undergoes a blossoming, colourful transformation. Snowdrops, crocuses and daffodils burst forth and frosty gardens are carpeted with drops of white, yellow and purple as far as the eye can see. Like the calm before the storm, the entire city slowly wakes from a winter-long hibernation before bursting forth into summer festival madness. Sure, there is still a bit of a nip in the air, but if you can brave the crisp clear springtime air, it’s worth it. Because it’s the perfect time to visit our vibrant capital city. So, here are some of the brightest and best upcoming Edinburgh events of the season.
Spectacular spring shows
Throughout the spring season, there are some huge hit shows coming to Edinburgh Playhouse. Such as Hairspray The Musical, Dreamgirls and Rock Of Ages. The Russian State Ballet of Siberia perform Romeo and Juliet and Swan Lake. Plus, comedians Jack Dee, Steve Coogan (as Alan Partridge) and Brydon, Mack and Mitchell. And concerts from Marti Pellow and Van Morrison. See a full list of what’s on here.
Book early for these fabulous shows as they are known to sell out quickly. And we’re just a short walk from the theatre, so you don’t need to worry about getting home after the performance.
Kick-start your spring with the Meadows Marathon on 6th March 2022. This running festival includes a 5K, 10K, relay, half marathon and full marathon. You can register now to take part in any of these events, or come down on the day to cheer on the runners. Many will be raising money for charities and important causes. There will be live music and a great, supportive atmosphere, so get involved!
This year, Mothering Sunday falls on 27th March. This is a great time to celebrate the special women in your life. Why not take them for a day out in Edinburgh to explore the sights of the city?
Edinburgh Science Festival
Edinburgh’s annual Science Festival happens during the Easter holidays. It was the first festival of its kind and is still one of the biggest celebrations of science and technology. This year, the theme is Revolutions, focusing on revolutionary approaches to science with an emphasis on tackling climate change. The programme will include an array of amazing events for both children and adults. Many spaces in Edinburgh will become Science Festival hubs for discussions and debate, exploration and discovery. Be sure to book in advance, as events are popular.

This spring, a new immersive, interactive experience arrives in Edinburgh’s Festival Square. Van Gogh Alive is an art exhibition that you can step inside and walk around! From 17th March 2022, journey through the world of Van Gogh’s paintings. A must for all art lovers.
Beltane Fire Festival
Mark the end of winter and the beginning of summer at the annual Beltane Fire Festival on 30th April 2022. A modern interpretation an ancient Iron Age Celtic ritual. It takes place just around the corner from our hotel, atop Calton Hill. A procession of characters, including the May Queen and Green Man will light the Beltane bonfire to mark the birth of the summer. (This event is recommended for over 18s).
World Whisky Day and Whisky Month
Whisky lovers rejoice! World Whisky Day is on 21st May 2022, but here in Scotland, we dedicate the entire month of May to our favourite tipple. Celebrate at the Whisky Stramash, usually also in May. Or, join an Edinburgh Whisky Tasting and really get into the spirit things!
